Built for the Black Hills — and the People Who Call It Home

Founded right here in Box Elder, Hay Camp Mechanical proudly serves Rapid City and communities throughout the Black Hills with down-to-earth service, honest pricing, and the kind of quality work you recommend to a friend.

Whether we’re tuning up a mini-split, replacing a furnace, or installing a brand-new HVAC system, we treat your home with the same care we’d give our own.

Hay Camp Mechanical officially opened its doors in 2023, but our roots in the HVAC industry go much deeper. With over 12 years of hands-on experience under our belt, we started this company with one goal in mind: to provide reliable, local climate control solutions that make life more comfortable and more affordable for families across western South Dakota. The name “Hay Camp” pays homage to Rapid City’s early nickname, a nod to the region’s heritage and the hardworking spirit of its people.

Community matters to us. We’re proud to offer a 10% discount to military members, veterans, first responders, and homeschooling families, just one way we show our appreciation to those who give back. Last year, we were honored to donate a full HVAC system to Habitat for Humanity, and we look forward to continuing to support local families and organizations whenever we can.

The Story Behind "Hay Camp"

Long before Rapid City became the bustling gateway to the Black Hills, it was first known by another name — Hay Camp. In early 1876, a group of eleven settlers made camp on the banks of Rapid Creek at a natural entry point into the hills. That campsite would become the seed of today’s city.

The next day, under the direction of Samuel Scott, those pioneers laid out a one-square-mile business district. They called this settlement “Hay Camp.” Not because hay was the central industry, but because it served as a camping and supply base for the many wagon trains, miners, and pioneers heading into the Black Hills.

Unlike many other towns born from gold strikes, Rapid City didn’t start as a mining camp. Instead, it existed to supply and support them. Wagons laden with provisions, tools, and equipment would stop at Hay Camp before pressing into the rugged hills.

Later, to commemorate the fast waters of the creek that runs through town, the name was changed to Rapid City. Rapid Creek’s name — and the city’s proximity to the creek — gave the city its more permanent identity.

Today, the original camp site is memorialized in Founders Park. Here, a historical marker notes that on February 24, 1876, those eleven men—including Brennan, Persinger, Ferguson, Allen, Marston, Nuttal, Major Hutchinson, and others—made their first camp and carved names into the sandstone near the creek.

So when you see “Hay Camp” in our company name, you’re seeing a tribute — a way of connecting to Rapid City’s roots as a frontier supply hub, a gateway to adventure, and a community built to support those who tamed the hills.
